Innovation Expo Gets Full Coast Guard Channel Coverage

Scotts Valley, CA—The Coast Guard Innovation Expo brought Coast Guard Channel News producers Regan Eymann and Susan O'Connor Fraser to New Orleans this past week. Regan Eymann notes that "This was a critically important event for us. We believe we're right at the leading edge of what's happening in the Coast Guard and that's what this expo is all about...the most innovative ideas in the Coast Guard. We wanted to meet the other companies and individuals (inside and outside the Coast Guard) that are part of Coast Guard innovation."

"Unlocking the Power of Ideas" was the theme of the event, which kicked off with a speech by New Orleans Mayor Ray Naggin and included a powerful keynote address by David Walker, the Comptroller General of the United States. Panel discussions in the main ballroom included Innovations in Government, Biometrics at Sea, and the Deployable Operations Group. Breakout sessions covered many other topics related to innovation. The climax of the event was the awards ceremony, where those that had made the most impact on Coast Guard Innovation were honored, and the closing keynote address by Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Thad Allen.

In addition, to the presentations were the exhibits by Coast Guard units and outside vendors and partners. "Besides interviewing the Commandant as he toured the show floor, I think the exhibits themselves were the most exciting to me," added Producer and Co-Founder, Susan O'Connor Fraser. "Seeing the new products that are being deployed now and down the line. And talking to the people and companies behind those products and ideas."

The interviews captured on the Exhibit Floor are being packaged into a new series launching on the Coast Guard Channel in 2008 called "Coast Guard Innovation". Eymann adds "We'll have features on a wide range of topics from body armor to communications systems, boats to breathing apparatus for fire fighting. It's going to be different every week."

The Coast Guard Channel is the first internet television network based on a branch of the military. It was launched in February of 2007. It will be relaunched in 2008 (what the Channel is calling their official grand opening) with a line up of new series and features. The Coast Guard Channel is being produced by Scotts Valley, California-based Tam Communications.
