Coast Guard Channel Wraps East Coast Trip
Scotts Valley, CA—The itinerary began in Washington DC at the Coast Guard Aviation Association Annual Roost. The Coast Guard Channel's coverage of the roost included opening remarks by Vice Commandant Admiral Vivien Crea and the closing ceremony/awards ceremony with keynote speaker Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Thad Allen. In between, the Coast Guard Channel News team spent their days interviewing the incredible line-up of Coast Guard aviators who were on hand.
According to Tam O'Connor Fraser, co-founder of the Coast Guard Channel, "We talked with the commanding officers of Air Stations, people working in Coast Guard headquarters who are at the forefront of Coast Guard aviation, former rescue swimmers Larry Farmer and Butch Flythe, and Norman Horton, one of the original founders of the Coast Guard Aviation Association." The association is also known as the Ancient Order of Pterodactyls. These interviews along with other video being gathered by the Channel is being developed into a series about Coast Guard aviation that will launch in 2008.
But Washington DC was only the first stop on an itinerary that took the Coast Guard Channel News team to Stations Hatteras Inlet and Oregon inlet on Cape Hatteras; the historic life saving station at Chicamacomico; Air Station Elizabeth City; the Coast Guard Communication Center in Chesapeake, Virginia; and the home of the Coast Guard Honor Guard in Alexandria. Regan Eymann notes, "We're gathering lots of stories--some that will air this year but most for 2008. One of our new series in 2008, for example, is a series about Coast Guard mascots called 'Who's Your Doggy?' We met Roxy at Station Oregon Inlet while we were there shooting an episode for our series "Get to Know A Station".
The Channel is also developing their next long-form documentary project "Wave Warriors: Surfmen of the USCG". Interviews at Stations Hatteras and Oregon Inlet along with surf video provided by the crews that work the waters known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic" will be instrumental in completing this feature-length DVD.
The Coast Guard Channel is the first internet television network based on a branch of the military. It was launched in February of 2007. It will be relaunched in 2008 (what the Channel is calling their official grand opening) with a line up of new series and features. The Coast Guard Channel is being produced by Scotts Valley, California-based Tam Communications.
