Cutters Across the Continent Covered by the Coast Guard Channel
Scotts Valley, CA—It was an historic event: the 50th Anniversary of the Cutters Across the Continent--the anniversary of the first time that vessels of the United States traveled through the Northwest Passage. During the historic voyage, much of the knowledge still used today to navigate the Passage was gathered by the Coast Guardsmen aboard the Cutters Storis, Spar, and Bramble. The anniversary event, held in Reno, Nevada, brought sailors that were on those ships back together--many for the first time, and the Coast Guard Channel was there to cover the event in full. Susan O'Connor Fraser, co-founder of the network noted, "It was such an honor to be able to sit down and talk to these men who had made history but also interesting to realize that they didn't realize, at the time, they were doing it. Many of them were young and just doing their jobs."
According to O'Connor Fraser, the interviews gathered during the event will be made part of a special to be aired on the Coast Guard Channel in 2008. In addition to interviewing Coast Guard veterans, the Coast Guard Channel News team also sat down with Coast Guard Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Robert Papp, talking to him about the special event as well as about the reorganization that is currently underway in the Coast Guard. The team also talked to members of the Coast Guard's silent drill team and the Coast Guard band--both of whom were performing in Reno. Tam O'Connor Fraser, co-founder of the Channel, noted, "These interviews and the taping of their respective performances will be part of new features that we'll be added to the Channel next year. We're in the process of building a library of exciting new content so that every week in 2008, we'll have lots of new features and new episodes of new and returning series to bring to Viewers."
The Coast Guard Channel is the first internet television network based on a branch of the military. It was launched in February of 2007. Tam O'Connor Fraser adds "2007 is what we're calling our 'soft' opening. Like a restaurant where you spend a certain amount of time perfecting processes and recipes, we're spending this year building content and relationships. We've come a long way in these first six months and in 2008, we're going to knock people's socks off." The Coast Guard Channel is being produced by Scotts Valley, California-based Tam Communications.
