MAUI - Lt. J.G. The Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay, a 140-foot ice breaking tug, approaches the Detroit and Windsor, Ontario skylines as it transits down the Detroit River. The Bristol Bay is underway to remove navigational buoys from Lake Erie as part of the 9th Coast Guard District's annual Operation Fall Retrieve, which is designed to limit damage to navigation buoys in the Great Lakes during the winter months.

CHEBOYGAN, Mich. Members of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw load more than 1,300 Christmas trees onto the ship in preparation for its journey to Chicago. The Mackinaw is once again serving as the Christmas Ship, reenacting an annual tradition which began in the late 1800s by Captain Herman Schuenemann until he and his crew perished aboard the Rouse Simmons in a storm in November of 1912.

QUEEN ANNE, Md. - Members from Coast Guard Sector Baltimore pose with Marine Sgt. Christopher Santiago (in blue shirt) during a Homes for Our Troops Build Brigade. An estimated 150 volunteers from the community, including members of the Coast Guard, spent two days constructing the specially adapted home for Santiago, who lost both of his legs and severely injured his left arm when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while deployed to Iraq in 2006.

GULF OF MEXICO - Commercial vessels extinguish a platform fire on board West Delta 32 approximately 20 miles offshore Grand Isle, La., in the Gulf of Mexico. First responders medevaced nine of the platform's 22 personnel to nearby rigs.

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team members hone their marksmanship skills using an electronic target system while visiting the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. During the visit, the team met with cadets and members of the Academy combat arms team, explained the missions of the MSRT, and demonstrated tactical equipment used in Coast Guard law enforcement.
